My INQ28 warband profiles & I take on the Tau

With our first game of INQ28 just under two weeks away I've been among other thing's doing a little bit on my warband with their profiles finely done & the painting moving a long at a nice pace.

With 3 of the models fully painted I need to decide what way I want to do the bases, but with me doing GM  for the first couple of game's & with only one game a month I've plenty of time to make up my mind but like all modellers I'm always working on a few things at any one time so it would be nice to have them done & off the table.

Below  are some pictures from my game against Ger's Tau it was his first time using them although he's had them for a while, as it would have made no sense to learn the rules for them a couple of months before the new dex.
I just went for the old fashion rush across the table job

Thses guys I use as spawns

These two where maulerfiends

The rhino was a rhino lol
Some of the fish type people deploying
My deployment from a far as Ger carry's on deploying
Like I said  i just rushed them
It really is a mazing how quick you can get a cross the table these's days
Just to prove that despite popular belief I don't always  roll ones yes the white dice is a six as well
It quickly became a Tau worst nightmare
Crunch  crunch
It just won't die
But they will
They might not have died in the explosion but that won't help them
My thanks to Ger for the game & I'm sure the Tau will get some payback soon enough

A Night in the Shack

A long time ago in the way back when in a picture house now closed down I use to go to the late night show on a Friday night with my mates.
So typical night Friday night would be playing cards & then off to see a movie in the Fairview, now as often as not I would fall a sleep half way through the film as late night films could be anything really you just had to take the good with the bad.

So this Friday night the movie is Starwars by this time it is probably finished showing in the picture house's as was the norm for the late night movie, & even though I've always being big into scfi I hadn't seen this film as after all it's a kids movie with silly robots right, so I agreed to tag a long happy in the knowledge that if it crap I could always go a sleep.

So I'm sitting there with coke, (drink kind) popcorn & the rest of the usual goods the film starts with A New Hope coming up on the screen fallowed by the rest or the writhing & then the camera seems to pan off into empty space with a ship then coming onto the screen with laser bolts  flashing by it & been shot out of it.
This is then fallowed by a try-angler point that then spreads as the star destroyer chasing the smaller rebel  ship starts to cover the whole screen & I'm a Starwars fan hook, line & sinker.

Now why am I telling you all this ? well it just so happens that last night I headed down to that part of south county Dublin where men seem to have an unnatural fondness for sheep to have a game of x-wing with Nigel in the shack.

I hadn't played this game before & as all the models are already painted there is no hobby end of this game to enjoy doing but the models themselves are cool  after all this is Starwars, so I was always going to enjoy this no matter what.

But truth be told just as with the movie all those years ago I fond the game to move along at a good pace & to be a fun & very enjoyable, & just look at the ship in the picture above who doesn't love the falcon.

So the set up was Nigel with the falcon & an x-wing against my x-wing & two a-wings, another big bonus for me with this game was the fact that there are no one's on the dice.

What was my take on the game ? well it's Starwars so for someone like myself the models would be worth getting even if I never played but it really is a game well worth playing.

We fallowed Starwars up with another game I hadn't played before the card game of Blood Bowl, I'd played the real thing before but not this needless to say I picked the chaos team & the four of us had a good laugh punching each others players out of the game.

Just as with my trip to the Fairview picture house all those years ago was well worth it so was my trip down to the hobby shack last night where apart from playing games I also got a change to catch up with some other guys I don't get to see to often.

So my thanks to Nigel for the game of Starwars, to Mat, Nigel (again) & the Scotsman (I'm hopeless with names) for the game of Blood Bowl & as I was in the town where NWG take's place for anyone who has put up with my waffling to get to this stage of the post a sneak preview of one of the terrain pieces I'm working on for my alien table with is my NWG challenge.

How to Boarding Stations

Table top gaming is base around two things models & terrain & depending on what scale your playing at can take up very little room or quiet a lot.
The system you play can also have a very big effect terrain wise & the type of terrain you'll need will be determined by the setting you choose to play in, a WWII game will more often then not will be played out over open spaces with fields, some wood' & maybe a small village this I think would certainly be true for the likes of FoW.

Tables for gaming on come in two forms modular or flat where you put the terrain down on top of them, now they both have their advantages a modular table will be done in such a way that everything blends in together & if done right will look a million dollars but will grow stale after awhile as your always fighting in that same place plus unless you have a big space for storage modular tables are really a non runner.

So the other type we have is the flat table where we put terrain on to it.
The little table in the picture above I'm only using for this demo & the model on it is a GW 28mm scale it is in fact a 40K IG model the table is about 2 foot 6 x 2 foot, now one of the great things about a game like 40K is that the only limits to the type of terrain you can fight over is your own imagination.

Now I'm not going to go into the type of terrain that most games of 40K take place in, but one of the things that a lot of 40K players dream of doing is fighting a boarding action on a spaceship or fighting inside some kind of industrial complex.
So the type of terrain we need for this is made up of large areas & corridors, now if we do this like the modular table after a few games it will feel stale, we could make up some rooms & corridors that are interchangeable but can be a lot of stuff to store.

There is however another way to do this which I'm going to explore in this post, now the stuff I'll be using to form the rooms & corridors is not painted as I was jut trying this out to see how it would work so it's like a bit of a live post in that regard.
So we'll start with cutting our walls.
These are 3" wide & different lengths is 3mm thick & here's a link to where you can get it or all the information on it.    http://www.365plastics.ie/index.php/plastic-sheets/foam-pvc-sheets.html

Now you can add some detail to the walls if you wish it would improve the look of things but it's more work.

A few little bits like those in the picture above will add greatly to the over all feel of the terrain when everything is painted but that's not what were after in this post.

I next cut a strip of clear plastic 1" wide & then cut it 1x1 pieces & then glued them to the bottem of the wells as stands.

When doing this keep the pieces bach about 3/4 of an inch from the ends so that when one wall is butting up to another that the plastic pieces  won't end up on top of one another.

As you can see your walls sections work out nicely for creating rooms & corridors & by adding some things inside them we create the different parts of the ship.

Then using the same wall pieces -1 I made a completely different lay out.

So such a simple design gives us plenty of options, you can of course add more detail in the way of blast doors & raised walkways plus the more different length wall you make the more options you'll have.

This type of terrain can be used in many other game systems as well such as infinity or tomorrow's war.

When doing table's like these for 40K however it does mean that certain units can not be used but that can be half the fun of playing these type of missions.

Playing a killteam game can make a nice change from your everyday game of 40K

& can be every bit as challenging.

This system also has another big advantage over the other two you talked about earlier in the post & that's storage.

With the exception of the longest wall section all the other pieces I used in the pictures above to make the interior of the spaceship on a 2 foot 6 x 2 foot table takes up only a small part of the box which means enough walls to fill a 6x4 table could be put into the box & not take up to much room on a shelf.

So I think we can safely say our little experiment worked out fairly well & is one I'll be adding to the things to do list.
